Polio outbreak in Philippines
In September 2019, the Philippines declared an outbreak of polio. Two cases have been reported to date. These are the first polio cases since the Philippines was declared polio free 19 years ago in 2000.
Polio is an infectious disease which spreads rapidly. It can cause paralysis and, on rare occasions, can be fatal. There is no cure for polio—it can only be prevented with multiple doses of polio vaccines.
Recommendation
WHO and the Philippine health authorities recommend that all travellers and residents in polio-affected areas be fully vaccinated against polio.
Travellers from Ireland to polio infected countries, even if they previously received three or more doses of OPV or IPV, may also need a booster dose of polio vaccine (such as Tdap/IPV) before travel and should consult their travel health clinic or GP.
