Wild polio virus detected in Israel - update

WHO has issued an update on the wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) isolated from sewage and healthy children and one adult in Israel. There is evidence of increasing geographic extent of circulation over a prolonged period of time. No case of paralytic polio has been reported. Increased surveillance activities and a supplementary immunisation campaign with bivalent oral polio vaccine (OPV) has started in parts of southern Israel during the week of 5 August 2013, and a nationwide campaign is planned for 18th August 2013 for children up to the age of nine years.

All travellers to and from poliovirus-affected areas are advised to be fully vaccinated against polio.
