Rubella outbreak in Romania
A large rubella outbreak is currently occurring in Romania. More than 1800 cases have been reported. All individuals who are travelling to Romania should ensure that they are protected against rubella before travel.
One dose of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR) protects most people against rubella as well as measles and mumps. Two doses are usually recommended for maximum protection. In Ireland MMR is routinely given at 12 months of age and again at 4-5 years of age. However, older age is not a contraindication to vaccination.
All individuals, particularly those born since 1978, should ensure that they are protected against measles and rubella when travelling to Romania or other European destinations this year. If you are not, you risk being infected, and you may spread measles to others. Rubella infection is particularly dangerous for pregnant women and their unborn babies.
