Laboratory criteria
At least one of the following three:
- Demonstration of malaria parasites by light microscopy in blood films
- Detection of Plasmodium nucleic acid in blood
- Detection of Plasmodium antigen
Differentiation of Plasmodium spp. should be performed if possible
