Sentinel GP surveillance of clinical diseases

Since 2000, HPSC has worked in collaboration with the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP), the National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL) and the Departments of Public Health on the sentinel GP surveillance project. Sixty general practices (located in all HSE-Areas and representing 5.7% of the national population) were recruited to report electronically, on a weekly basis, the number of patients who consulted with influenza-like illness (ILI) and clinical cases of measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox (varicella), shingles (Herpes Zoster) and gastroenteritis.

The ICGP collate all clinical data from the sentinel GPs. At HPSC, clinical sentinel data are validated and analysed and surveillance reports are produced as follows:
