Published:

Over the last number of weeks, there has been an increase in the number of norovirus cases, and outbreaks, reported in Ireland. This is part of a larger picture internationally; both the UK and the US are reporting upsurges of norovirus, to levels considerably higher than those seen in the immediate prepandemic period, with outbreaks particularly affecting the acute and residential sectors.

It is possible that norovirus levels in Ireland will continue to rise. Past experience has shown that upsurges, which occur every few years, tend to last for about 8-12 weeks. As a result, HSE-HPSC have produced guidance on the management of norovirus specific to residential care settings.
