Measles Serosurveillance
Measles is an acute viral disease. It has been a notifiable disease in Ireland since 1948. The measles virus is highly contagious and spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Information on the signs and symptoms of measles are available on the HSE website. Measles can be prevented through vaccination with the MMR vaccine and in 2018 Ireland achieved measles elimination status. Sporadic measles cases continued to be reported to the HSE HPSC and from 2020-2023 most cases were related to travel from countries with ongoing outbreaks. Measles seroprevalence studies conducted by the NSP in adults and children have enhanced disease surveillance and contributed to the public health response to the recent increase in cases.
