First human case of Influenza (H5N1) in North America confirmed


Public Health Canada has confirmed the first and only human case of Influenza (H5N1) in North America. All evidence is indicating that the individual was infected following exposure in China. The case, which was fatal, was described as being a very rare and isolated case.

In 2013, there were 38 world-wide cases of H5N1 avian influenza reported to the World Health Organization and 24 deaths.
