1 December 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. The theme of World AIDS day 2008 is “Lead – Empower – Deliver”, building on last year’s theme of “Take the Lead”. According to the latest global figures published by UNAIDS and the WHO in their 2008 report on the Global AIDS Epidemic, the number of new HIV infections has declined from 3 million in 2001 to 2.7 million in 2007. However, although the number of new infections has fallen in several countries, the AIDS epidemic is not over in any part of the world and rates of new HIV infections are rising in many countries including China, Indonesia, the Russian Federation and Ukraine. It is estimated that there are 33 million people living with HIV worldwide with nearly 7,500 new infections each day. Further information on the global HIV and AIDS pandemic can be found on the UNAIDS website www.unaids.org.
