National Implementation of the CIDR system
Following the successful implementation of CIDR during a pilot phase (May-December 2004) national CIDR implementation began in January 2005. CIDR roll-out has progressed across the country since then, following the original plan for national implementation.

What is the plan for national implementation of CIDR?
The plan for national implementation was informed by the findings of the CIDR Evaluation Committee. The key elements of the plan were:
- One or more HSE-Areas would be implemented at a time;
- Public health had to implement CIDR ('go-live') before, or on the same day, as local laboratories;
- Training would be delivered centrally at HPSC, ensuring the availability of trainers and IT support, as well as a wider choice of training dates, and the delivery of high quality training to all;
- The plan should be sufficiently flexible to facilitate continued progress in the event of unexpected obstacles being encountered in any one area.
Who leads national implementation of CIDR?
National implementation is led by the CIDR team at HPSC in conjunction with Regional Implementation Committees (RICs). The process is supported by active engagement with the national CIDR user group (representing CIDR users in all HSE-Areas).
Which laboratories and HSE-Areas are using CIDR currently (May 2009)?
The labs and HSE-Areas currently using CIDR are listed below, as well as the date on which they started using the system.

* These sites participated in the CIDR pilot from May to December 2004 but switched to CIDR (ceased parallel working with pre-CIDR systems) from February 2005.
What is the plan for implementing CIDR in the remaining labs and HSE-Areas?
The CIDR team at HPSC have been in close contact with all Regional Implementation Committees since the start of 2005. CIDR team will continue to support and encourage RICs in their work to implement CIDR. It is hoped that CIDR will be fully implemented in Departments of Public Health across the country by the end of 2009. However, full laboratory implementation may take longer.
