Zika Virus Infection - List of affected countries/areas

Currently, outbreaks of Zika virus are occurring in many parts of the world. The following table provides advice on travelling to the different affected areas based on the following categories:

1. Countries with ongoing transmission of Zika virus infection*:

• pregnant women or women planning a pregnancy are advised to postpone all non-essential travel
• All other travellers should discuss travels plans with their health care prior to booking/travelling AND take steps to avoid mosquito bites for the duration of their stay in an affected area
  

 2. Countries with interrupted transmission**:

Current advice for all travellers (including pregnant women or women planning a pregnancy) is to:

• discuss travel plans with your health care provider prior to booking/travel
• take steps to avoid mosquito bites for the duration of their stay in an affected area
• check affected areas before travelling in case a country starts to report active transmission again

PLEASE NOTE: 

Men who travelled to these affected areas while transmission was active should delay conception until:

* 6 months after last exposure in the Zika affected area

OR

* 6 months after Zika transmission was interrupted, if they were/ are resident in a previously affected area 

Countries with a mosquito able to transmit Zika but no transmission to date***:

Advice for all travellers is to:

• check affected areas before travelling in case a country is now reporting active transmission
• take steps to avoid mosquito bites for the duration of their stay to avoid other diseases spread by mosquitos.

**Based on Category 3 of WHO Zika virus country classification scheme plus CDC US guidance for Florida and Texas.

Minimum timeline for determining transition to an interrupted state is 12 months after the last confirmed case and no cases identified in travellers.
