2019 RCSI/HPSC Safe Patient Care: Infection Prevention & Control Course

The tenth annual Safe Patient Care Course took place in September 2019. The course is jointly run by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), The 2019 course targeted frontline hospital staff, that have an interest in patient safety but are not infection control specialists.

Attendees got a greater understanding about the important role they have in preventing healthcare associated infections and how they can influence others as well as gaining knowledge about a range of topics including:

  • Basic microbiology and multi-drug resistant organisms
  • Strategies for tackling CPE
  • Standard and transmission-based precautions
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCAs)
  • Management of invasive medical devices & wounds
  • Outbreak management
  • Immunisation
  • Quality improvement techniques
  • Important role of the environmental and HCAI’s
