National C. difficile Surveillance, Typing and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Study, 2014

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre, St. Vincents University Hospital and University College Dublin conducted a 3 month study to obtain typing and antimicrobial susceptibility data on C. difficile infection (CDI) in Ireland. The project ran from 1st April to 30th June 2014 and coincided with the Q2 period of the C. difficile enhanced surveillance project. All participating hospitals were to send faecal specimens from both new and recurrent CDI cases for ribotyping and susceptibility testing. Results provide a national overview of the genetic diversity of C. difficile ribotypes that circulate in Ireland as well as information on antimicrobial susceptibility profiles. A national report will be available later in the year.
